The art of cycling

A US artist uses his bicycle as a pencil and the roads as his canvas to create what he calls GPX Riding.Michael Wallace uses a GPS device to track his route and create giant images at the same time.It creates a continuous line which he uses to create shapes and figures which he has previously mapped out. These include the Manhattan skyline, an owl, a train, an elephant and many more, on the streets of his home city of Baltimore.

The school teacher picks his route by staring at a street map to see if any interesting shapes or structures 'pop' out at him.Sometimes, he has ride the wrong way down one-way streets; through alleyways or dangerous busy roads to finish his GPS artwork.

Mr Wallace said: "I've learnt a lot about my neighbourhood from doing GPX Riding and become familiar with street names and gained knowledge of the local terrain."Every ride requires me to have lots of focus and awareness of what's around me as well as a positive mental attitude and lots of confidence."I always feel a sense of adventure just prior to the start of every ride. I suppose I feel this way because I am unsure of what might happen, which in itself provides and quenches my thirst of exploration."
