In an attempt to release the stress and pressures of everyday life and prepare themselves for a new start in the new year, young office workers and students in Shanghai gathered for two harmless enormous pillow fights on the day before Christmas and on December 30.This marked the fifth consecutive year the popular stress-reducing pillow battle has occurred. The pillows that filled the air with feathers all bore the names of bosses and teachers.
“Nowadays, there are many white-collar workers and students who are facing huge pressures at work and at school…so today we can go crazy. Everyone will get to write onto the pillows the names of their bosses, teachers and exam subjects, and enjoy and vent to the maximum,” said Eleven Wang, the creator of the epic pillow fight event.
Unlike American frontier days, when guns were checked at the door to the saloon, in Shanghai, pillows are given out at the door, so to speak. Stoked by the power of rock music, participants waved their pillows in time with the melodies before they began throwing them up into the air and then every which way, whacking any and all faces that happened to block their paths.
Even those who were at first hesitant to join the battle soon became attackers in this confrontation, not of wits but of feathers. The goal is to get all the stress out of their systems so that they can face their daily lives with renewed energy and joyful hearts.
