Prisoners can be force-fed: US court

Connecticut state Supreme Court has ruled prison officials can restrain and force-feed inmates. This to protect them from life-threatening dehydration and malnutrition.Monday s ruling came in the case of 51-year-old prisoner William Coleman, who stopped eating in September 2007 to protest his conviction on what he called a fabricated rape charge. His weight dropped from 237 pounds (107.5 kilograms) to 129 pounds (58.51 kilograms) over 13 months, and officials say they were forced to use a feeding tube at least a dozen times.
Court records say Coleman voluntarily began taking liquid nutrition in 2008. His lawyers say he resumed his hunger strike last week.

The court said it and the U.S. Supreme Court have found inmates rights can be limited to keep order.
